An ammonia gas leak in a chemical plant in Yinchuan, Ningxia poisoned 33 people on Saturday afternoon, according to Xinhua News.
Witnesses say they saw the gas spurting out of a pipe in the Jiemeifengyou Chemical Plant. Most victims suffered minor poisoning, while local authorities say that the seriously poisoned are now out of harm’s way.
Following the accident, the company sprayed water outside to dilute the gas in the air. They say the air surrounding the plant meets safety standards (whatever those are).
Workers fared better than the 100,000 kilograms of fish killed by an ammonia spill in a Hubei river last year.
The cause of the accident is not yet known.
