Scientists are testing the plausibility of Chen Guangbiao’s thirty-minute ice bucket challenge submission by recreating the performance with some very, very sad looking mice. Few could forget Chen’s ALS Bucket Challenge, in which the self-proclaimed philanthropist sat in a recycling bin with water and “ice” for thirty minutes. The video was reposted by thousands of netizens, many of whom questioned whether he used actual ice.
Now, researchers at the Affiliated Hospital of Henan Institute for Health are soaking mice in ice water to prove Chen’s stunt was just that—a stunt. These poor mice only lasted five minutes in ice water at -0.12 degrees Celsius.
Considering Chen is slightly larger than the average mouse, whether or not he could handle thirty minutes of ice bucket bathing is still up for debate. Next controversy: is debunking his ALS challenge really worth freezing mice?
