There are very few things certain to happen each day: the sun will rise, there will be fighting in the Middle East, and China will somehow figure out a way add to its list of silly world records. On Saturday, more than 10,000 people in Jiangxi did their part by getting their feet washed.
The event took place in Yichun, Jiangxi and featured a grand total of 10,289 pairs of thoroughly clean and pampered feet, according to NetEase News.
A Guinness official (dude must rack up crazy amounts of frequent flyer miles in China) was on hand to verify that this was in fact the largest group of people to have their feet washed at the same time in recorded human history.
The event washed away the previous record of 4,363 pairs of feet set last year in Taipei. But the new record might not last long as Taipei has yet another mass foot-washing ceremony planned for October 12 and they are ready with 10,000 foot-washing sets. This can’t be good for cross-straight relations.
The event promoted filial piety–an essential Chinese value that sometimes happens to slip through the cracks–with more than 3,000 young kids washing their parents’ feet.
