Photos taken by a journalist of an elderly beggar sitting on the ground while counting piles of change he made from begging at a Beijing post office have gone viral online, The Beijing News relays.
The elderly man from Jiangsu province is about 70 years old. He survives by begging for money in Beijing and manages to send about 10,000 RMB (1,600 USD) back home to support his family every month. He once told people the money earned from begging has become the only source of income for his family. With that money, he supports three university students in his family, and built a two-story house in his hometown.
According to an insider, the elderly man often comes to make his remittance of about 10,000 RMB every month, up to 20,000 RMB on holidays. After this past Mid-Autumn Festival, he came to the post office three consecutive days as he couldn’t count all of the money in one day.
He usually counts the money on the floor then hands it over to the counter to mail back home.
“Whoever helps me count the money can get 100 RMB in tips,” he told people in the post office. A security guard was on good terms with him and helped him every time. The clerk takes the initiative to help him as well.
“We won’t take the tips from him.” he jokingly said, “The old man has become our big customer!”
