Images of students who were spotted slumped over and snoozing during a lecture given by the well known 92-year-old professor Wu Liangyong at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing yesterday have caused some commotion online.
Professor Wu, a famous urban planner and architect, is an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering and was once rewarded the highest national award for science and technology.
After standing for the entire 35-minute speech, he reportedly needed to walk off with the aid of a cane.
Images taken by a reporter from China Youth Online showed nearly half of the student-filled audience, mostly Freshmen from various graduate schools, dozing off during Professor Wu’s speech.
Web users gave a little piece of their mind on the matter.
“People don’t even know how to show respect for an old man, which is so disappointing. We don’t even need to mention his title as an academician,” one user said.
“No matter what he says, I would try my best to remember what it was considering his age of 92!” said another.
One web user sympathized with the students: “The speech is a failure if the audience dozes off. Being 92 years old isn’t an excuse.”
