Three people were killed and an unknown number of people trapped after a building collapsed in Taiyuan, Shanxi province.
Rescuers at the scene yesterday managed to pull 15 people out of the wreckage. Three people have so far been reported as dead.
Residents said that the building had been under construction and workers were adding additional floors to it. They added that this was a common practice in the village.
A two-story building nearby collapsed as well, CRI reports.
The owner of the building wasn’t inside when it toppled, and it’s unclear how many people had been trapped inside.
The first floor of the building was rented as a vegetable store, owned by a family of four.
Earlier this year, one person was killed and several more trapped when a five-story apartment building collapsed in Zhejiang province. Local media said that many residents had recently reported cracks in the building that were never fixed. About a month later, two people were killed when a residential building in Shanghai’s Hongkou district suddenly toppled over, an incident which authorities have blamed on a gas explosion. Many of the buildings in the area had been scheduled for demolition in the past 10 years.
Similar events have led investigations on shoddy construction practices in cities across China.
