An explosion at a firework export factory in Liling city, Hunan province yesterday morning left at least 12 people dead, 33 injured and two more missing, Oriental Daily reports.
The factory has been running for more than 10 years with a legal license verified by Liling City police.
A reporter at the scene, surnamed Tang, discovered the extent of the damage where the factory had been razed to the ground. Bricks and broken glass scattered the area.
Tang said she doubted the reported death toll based on her professional sensitivity to such scenes. She had been threatened by a few men just as she was planning to leave the area.
