A 14-month-old girl in Shenzhen’s Bao’an district drowned in a bucket of water in a bathroom as her mother had been fiddling around on her smart phone on Wednesday, Guangzhou Daily reports.
The 23-year-old mother, surnamed Huang, lives in a 10-square-meter rental house. Two buckets had been placed in the bathroom, and at the time, one of them was filled with only a small amount of water.
Huang was playing on her phone while the little girl was playing with the water in the bathroom. All of a sudden, the child fell into the bucket of water and struggled to get out. She eventually drowned.
As soon as Huang found out, she rushed her daughter to the hospital, but unfortunately, the little girl was pronnounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
“The parent should’ve paid more attention to the child. It’s so sad that this happened,” a neighbor told reporters.
Another resident said that Huang usually took care of her daughter alone at home while her husband worked at a factory.
The husband was sent to the police station for further investigation.
