The “Happiest 5k On The Planet” came to Shanghai’s Oriental Sports Center in Pudong this past weekend, as 16,000 people participated in the 2014 Color Run.
Started in 2011 in the U.S., the Color Run has since been adopted in countries around the world. The popular event is more of a fun, selfie-snapping social activity than an actual competition or race.
There’s no time limit on the Color Run, so participants of all ages and fitness types are welcome to join. Participants get sprayed with fistfuls of different colored powder at each kilometer marker, so that everyone at the finish line in covered head-to-toe in multicolored powder.
For environmental reasons, the colored powder is made from a biodegradable corn-based substance. Many participants worried about inhaling the powder covered up with masks, goggles, swim caps, and ear protection.
