This morning, more than 100,000 people from all across China descended on Tiananmen Square to take part in the flag-raising ceremony to mark the 65th anniversary of the founding of the PRC, and to participate in another of China’s great traditions, leaving behind obscene amounts of garbage.
The exact weight of the trash has yet to be tabulated (another honored tradition). Last year, 5 tons of garbage were left behind, which sounds bad, until you find that the number was 19 tons in 2005. Got to admit things are getting better (couldn’t get any worse).
