A total of 1,587 new cases of the mosquito-borne dengue fever were reported in Guangdong province this week, health authorities said yesterday, bringing the total number of cases to 13,449.
Over 11,000 cases have been reported in Guangzhou alone, while neighboring Foshan reported 1,389 cases and Shenzhen reported 36. So far, 19 out of 21 prefecture-level cities have seen cases.
Four deaths have been reported as a result of infection, Xinhua said. Dengue is an infectious disease transmitted through mosquitos. Since the 90s, dengue epidemics have spread across Guangdong, Hainan andy Guangxi, but this round of outbreaks has been described as the worst in two decades.
Health authorities blame the wet weather in Guangdong for the excessive mosquito population currently five times its normal level in the province.
