At least three Chinese tourists were killed when the bus they were riding in collided with a van near Johannesburg yesterday, the Chinese Embassy in South Africa said.
The bus, carrying 20 Chinese tourists and a tour guide, was going back to Johannesburg from Sun City when a bakkie crashed into it head-on.
Two tourists were killed on the spot and one died after being transferred to Johannesburg by a rescue chopper, according to Xinhua. An unknown number of passengers suffered serious injuries.
Witnesses at the scene said the bakkie (a vehicle like a pick-up truck) collided with the tour bus while it was attempting to overtake another vehicle, and that the driver appeared to be drunk. It’s unclear whether the driver survived the crash, but the damage to the bakkie (first image) seems extensive.
