A 63-year-old yoga enthusiast named Lei Changgen arrived to teach a class at the Nanping Hongsheng Square in Nan’an district, Chongqing on the morning of September 30. Little did he know, he soon would be challenged by 80-year-old Wen Huazhong and his powerful “Iron arms”. Together, the two “grandpas” began showing off their crazy strength and putting on a show for passersby.
Lei and Wen’s show pretty much turned into a battle of strength. Passerby gathered around and recorded it, and when a teenage girl spotted the men she screamed: “I can’t even recreate that move!”
It all started when Lei, a yoga instructor, was teaching one of his regular classes at the Nanping Hongsheng Square. During the exercise, there was one person in particular that caught everyone’s attention—an old man dressed in all black.
Wen was able to follow along Lei’s yoga routine and then some. At one point, he pulled out two metal balls (reportedly weighing 6kg each) and began tossing and turning them up in the air like it was no big deal.
Just to confirm that he was probably more fit than most the onlookers present, the 80-year-old proceeded to do 30 pushups and countless other stunts. When the show wrapped up, he told onlookers: “do you guys want to squeeze by biceps? They are rock-hard.”
According to Lei, Wen challenged workout junkies and sports enthusiasts throughout the entire province to a sit-up and push-up challenge in 2006. Over 1,000 people participated in the push-up event and 3,000+ in the sit-up challenge, yet Wen walked away undefeated.
Wen told reporters: “I was diagnosed with hepatitis and tuberculosis in the 60s, then I started exercising and taking cold showers. In 2003 I started doing sit-ups and push-ups. Now at the age of 80 I have good hearing, good eyesight, and the symptoms I use to have are all gone.”
When asked whether the two see each other as competitors, Lei laughed and replied, “No, not at all.”
The two had met in 2013 when Wen took yoga lessons from Lei for about three months.
