Beijing saw a record 540,000 tourists flowing in and out of 26 major landmark areas on Wednesday, the first day of the national holiday and kickoff to the madness that is Golden Week.
The inflow of tourists this year upped last year’s by 33 percent. Authorities in Beijing say free admission to 370 parks on National Day was part of the reason for the increase. The
government-controlled beautiful weather also encouraged more travelers to visit scenic areas.
Among those was the Beijing Zoo, the capital’s top tourist destination on National day with 55,000 visitors. That number is up 173 percent from last year.
Meanwhile, Shanghai’s three main railway stations also handled a record number of people on Wednesday, with over 480,000 people boarding at Shanghai, Shanghai Hongqiao and Shanghai Southern stations.
Hubei’s Three Gorges Damn received 40,000 tourists on Thursday, the upper limit for a single day, despite it being a cesspool of garbage.
