Yuck. A group of 17 college student volunteers reportedly spent three hours collecting around 3,200 cigarette butts that were left behind in the smoky chaos of Golden Week. The smelly cig remains left scattered across 1.5 km of Hangzhou’s West Lake are just the collection from Thursday…
Bright side: the volunteers were delighted to tell reporters that tourists have made great progress, and the number of discarded cigarette butts is actually a vast improvement compared to the 7,000 butts that were collected by same amount of volunteers in the same period of time and location last year.
Hopefully more people have realized that the lake is not, in fact, a giant ashtray. Let’s hope that travelers are smoking less as well.
