A research organization for children with leukemia was established at Shanghai’s Children Medical Center over the weekend, Shanghai Daily reports.
A total of 19 hospitals across China along with the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong are involved in the project. Experts from the US-based St. Jude Children’s Research hospital, a leading cancer research facility, will also be involved. St. Jude and Shanghai Children’s Medical Center organized the first international cooperation center for children’s cancer back in 2011.
The organization will focus on researching acute lymphoblastic leukemia, one of the most prevalent types seen in children.
Around 30 percent of children who are treated for such a disease in China relapse, a rate higher than hospitals such as St. Jude.
