Uh-oh. More images of “shameful” and “uncivilized” behavior by travelers during the week-long national holiday have surfaced on Chinese media. It is not uncommon to see pictures of people littering, peeing on the highway, trampling over national monuments, disrupting traffic and more—mainland tourists have been criticized for their actions on holiday before. The images below show how not only tourist destinations, but also expressways are subject of tourist vandalism or just downright bad behavior.
Some of you may recall other tourist antics that recently made headlines: the bloody fight on a delayed plane in Thailand, the parents who let their kid pee in a crowded street in Hong Kong, or (an even worse combination of the two) the parents who let their kid poop on an airplane seat. Reactions within mainland China have been wavering between shocked and defensive.
Last year the Chinese government called on tourists to mind their behavior and act more “civilized” when traveling. Earlier this year, the commerce secretary Gregory So Kam-leung of Hong Kong expressed his hope that the Hongkongers’ good manners will eventually rub off on first-time tourists. Let’s see if these ‘first-timers’ will be able to teach the holidaymakers at home how it’s done.
