If it’s floodin’, opportunists will come runnin’. That’s often the case in China when scores of locals are seen flocking to water-filled streets toting fishing poles to catch carp flushed out by overflowing water. In Zhengzhou city, Henan province, however, residents found another to cash on the flooded roads: selling license plates that had detached from abandoned cars swallowed by water.
A stretch of flooded road about 100 meters long near the intersection Pinggong Road and Fourth Ring Road led to a number of cars stalling and breaking down.
Lost plates that floated off in the water became submerged treasure for a gang of about eight men, who fished the things out and managed to sell them back for around 40 to 50 yuan each.
According to residents, the flooding is caused by a shoddy sewage system, and that section of road is continually inundated with muddy water.
Maybe it’s time to find a detour.
