It is time. Florentijn Hofman’s giant rubber duck will touch down at the Jingtian Lake in Pudong’s Century Park on October 23.
In its whirlwind tour of Asia, installations of the duck have already appeared in Hangzhou, Hong Kong (wherein mainland tourists were blamed for its deflation), Beijing (wherein it was criticized by Hongkongers for looking too “duck-like”) and Taiwan (wherein Hofman felt that the duck had become a commercial sell-out).
While it has spawned a number of imitators Shanghai’s long-awaited unveiling of the *authentic* rubber duck installment will finally take place on October 23 at Century Park, where Hofman’s giant inflated pink cat once reined supreme. The artist will be at the opening ceremony as well.
The duck will remain there until November 23, after which it will float on to transcend further physical and social boundaries.
