A mother in Zhuhai, Guangdong province came under fire after photos of her using iron chains as a leash for her nine-year-old son surfaced online, China News reported.
A web user claiming to be an eyewitness posted the photos to Weibo, where they quickly garnered attention from netizens and police. The witness said the boy had blood around his neck.
Gongbei Port Police tracked down the woman in question, a single mother surnamed Huang. She told the cops that her son had run away from home on several occasions, most recently on October 5. After she found him, she chained him up to keep him from running away again.
While Huang was largely criticized by netizens, The Nanfang points out that some users jumped to her defense and sympathized over how hard it can be to keep a kid from running away.
“Kids who don’t listen to parents are really a headache. My nephew has run away from home so many times. It has taken a huge toll on our family. Now we’ve bought him a computer, and that seems to have helped. But not long ago, the computer broke down, and he started running away from home again. Sigh, perhaps giving him what he likes is the only solution,” one user wrote.
