Two members of a Chinese cult responsible for the violent murder of a woman in a Shandong Macdonald’s outlet were sentenced to death, according to Xinhuanet.
Graphic video footage depicted the brutal incident in late May, in which the woman died on the spot after being repeatedly struck with an iron bar after she refused to giver her contact details to the six members, who had tried to recruit her into their “all-powerful spirit” cult. Bystanders were also criticized for their indifference.
Zhang Fan, 29, and her father Zhang Lidong, 55, were sentenced to death while Lu Yingchun, 39, was given life imprisonment. Two other members were jailed for ten and seven years respectively.
The cult, whose name translates in English as Church of Almighty God, preach that Jesus has been reincarnated as a Chinese woman. They also call the Communist Party the “great red dragon”, reported SCMP news. It was outlawed by the government in the mid-1990s.
