After a landslide ravaged a village in Guizhou province last month and killed over 20 people, Xinhua has reported that another landslide hit Shaanxi province, leaving at least 19 people dead.
The landslide destroyed a highway construction site and buried 21 workers in Yan’an city. Among them, 19 were killed and two others injured. The construction site contained temporary dormitories for the workers, which the landslide destroyed while they slept inside.
Landslides like this are thought to be triggered by the construction of roads and deforestation, as without tree roots there is nothing to hold the soil in place. Local authorities are now carrying out a geological survey of the area to try to prevent further landslides.
