Twelve people were sentenced to death in a Kashgar court yesterday for involvement in the attacks that killed 37 people in Shache County in July.
A total of 15 other people were given suspended death sentences, nine were imprisoned for life and 20 people were handed sentences between four and 20 years, BBC reported, citing government outlet Tianshan News.
A death sentence suspended for two years will usually be lessened to a life sentence if the convict displays good behavior in prison, WSJ said.
Those convicted were charged with “organizing, leading or participating in organized terror crimes, homicide, illegal construction of explosive devices, arson, kidnapping and harming public safety”.
On July 28, a group of assailants armed with knives and axes ambushed a police station and government offices in Elixku Township before moving to nearby townships, attacking people and smashing vehicles on the way, Xinhua reports. The attacks left another 94 people injured.
