Visitors to Shenzhen Zoo were treated to a touching display of affection on Monday morning when dozens of black swans were seen to be feeding the koi carp at the edge of the lake.
When speaking to reporters about the interaction, one of the zookeepers said that in the beginning, the swans were not actively attempting to feed the fish—it’s just a habit that has developed over time. He added that the black swans are fed dry granules and, in order to make the food easier to swallow, they first dip the feed into the lake water. The koi carp initially used to collect stray feed in the middle of the lake, but have now become comfortable taking feed directly from the swans’ mouths.
The black swans and koi carp have been living together at Shenzhen Zoo since 2004 and have, apparently, become inseparable ever since.
