A photo set titled “Dream Back to Tang Dynasty” has recently gone viral on Chinese social media. The photos show an elaborate Tang Dynasty-themed birthday party with six women dressed in full costume at a valley in Wenzhou’s Xixin Village.
“It was mid September when I drove past the valley and was taken away by the beautiful scenery. I suddenly thought that having a birthday party there would be a great idea, especially if everyone at the party dressed up in Tang dynasty period costumes,” said Zou Yuanyuan.
Zou Yuanyuan and her sister decided to host the themed party together to celebrate both of their birthdays. They were able to confirm a guest list of six, including themselves.
On October 12, the six ladies along with two photographers drove down to the valley with pre-made props such as the tea sets, a table, vases, food, and other things. The elaborate set-up took over an hour.
“Everyone here is over 30 years old and only one of us is still unmarried. My sister is already 36, the oldest amongst us. She’s married with kids,” Zou said.
The pictures were posted online by the photographer, who was one of Zou’s friends.
“He asked for our permission before the pictures were posted. We didn’t think much of it and agreed. We didn’t expect that they would gain such popularity. Although some viewers expressed envy, jealousy and even anger, most just had a good laugh,” Zou said.
“There was wine in the Tang Dynasty?…Did they pick up all their trash? Did they clean up all the rose petals they threw into the pond?” were among some of the more negative comments posted online.
We’re mostly wondering about that smoke effect.
