An e-commerce business which imports and sells African ostrich meat apparently thought that enlisting the help of young women to walk ostriches around Beijing’s Sanlitun and Dongdaqiao area would be, ahem, a great marketing strategy, Xinhua News reported.
Obviously Beijing residents who stumbled upon this bizarre sight were taken aback, commenting that it was a publicity stunt gone too far. This was especially since they were also offered samples of ostrich meat to try – right in front of the poor live ostrich parading its way around Beijing.
A man with the surname Liang said: “I take pity on the ostrich. Such a promotion strategy is too cruel”.
In fact, the marketing campaign involved not just this one woman and an ostrich, but also at least one more lady who was also walking an ostrich about in another area.
The police mentioned that there are currently no regulations in place for situations like this, but citizens can contact them to report any problematic issues. We hope those poor ostriches walking the streets wouldn’t be slaughtered and -gulp- turned into ostrich meat samples any time soon.
