A woman was found dead on Monday at an unlicensed medical clinic located in an apartment building above a wet market in Pudong.
The 48-year-old victim, originally from Jiangsu province, collapsed around 2:30 p.m. on Monday as she was walking from the second floor clinic to use a bathroom downstairs, Shanghai Daily said, citing an STV report.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene as soon as an ambulance arrived. The clinic was owned by a 41-year-old man from Anhui surnamed Yang. He’d been practicing medicine for more than five years, although he wasn’t licensed to do so.
The dirty clinic was littered with dead cockroaches and blood-stained bandages, according to police. A number of medical books, implements and drugs were found at the scene as well.
It’s unclear what type of procedure the woman had sought.
As one might expect, cases of botched procedures and death are frequently reported out of untrained or unlicensed clinics such as this, many of them being plastic surgery clinics. Last year, a 20-year-old woman went to an illegal medical clinic located in a Huangpu district apartment seeking nose reshaping surgery and was left blind in one eye after the procedure went horribly wrong.
Earlier this year, China closed down over 5,000 illegal clinics and investigated more than 30,000 cases of illegal practices in three months during a crackdown on illicit medical practices.
