The now-healthy baby gives a salute to photographers.
A teeny premie born just under two pounds has increased by a healthy seven pounds with the help of the Louxing People’s Hospital in Loudi of Hunan province, Tencent News reports.
The baby was born weighing a mere 0.8kg on June 17, about four months earlier than excepted due to his mother’s hemorrhaging.
Immediately after his birth, the child was no larger than the palm of a hand.
“Many people tried to persuade us to give up raising the baby as he was so small, not even as big as a palm. But he is the hope of our whole family,” the 19-year-old mother, Li Xiongyan, told reporters.
The baby weighed 3.19kg on October 10.
“Some people advised us to give up treatments on the baby, as he probably wouldn’t make it and our hospital would lose a lot of money,” said the doctor who treated Li.
He said that when the child was sent to the hospital, he was in extremely poor condition. Afraid of leaving him alone for even a moment, medical staff took turns keeping watch over the infant day and night.
Less than one month after the baby was born, Li and her husband headed to a nearby city to make money for the baby’s medical fares, and the child was left in the care of his grandfather.
The child’s grandpa said that the whole family spent all of their savings on medical care. Eventually, the hospital offered to reduce the infant’s treatment fees, and villagers chipped in with donations to help the poor family. The county government likewise granted the family a sum of money.
The child’s parents become emotional when visiting their son in the hospital.
The baby has fortunately pulled through, however, his future rehabilitation requires more medical expenses and time, doctors said.
