A man from Zhuhai, Guangdong province who’d been released from prison last month after serving 16 years for a crime he hadn’t committed is now suing the government for 3.3 million yuan in compensation.
The 56-year-old man, Xu Hui, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve in 1998 on charges of raping and murdering his neighbor, Yan Chunjuan, who’d been found dead in the street of a small town where the two had worked.
Xu’s lawyer, Hou Yantou, remained confident about his client’s innocence, and for the past 16 years, fought vehemently for his release, Shanghai Daily reports. The case was reopened in 2012.
The former inmate is seeking 2.1 million yuan for the psychological hardships suffered by his family and 1.2 million yuan for his years of lost freedom.
