Doctors in Beijing managed to extract all 12 needles from 11-month-old Fan Zixuan in just one operation on Tuesday, despite previously thinking that the removal would require several surgeries.
The girl’s parents took her to the hospital on October 20 after several swelling, red bumps began appearing on her body. X-ray photos showed 12 hypodermic and sewing needles had been embedded deep into the child’s flesh.
The girl’s family, originally from Shandong, had to borrow 70,000 yuan to cover the costs of the treatment after the child was transferred to a hospital in Beijing.
While this treatment usually requires more than one sugery, doctors were able to remove all 12 needles in a single, five-hour operation.
The abuse is believed to have been carried out by the girl’s aunt, who killed herself by drinking pesticide on October 24.
