While not a vibrant, highly visible testament to China’s beauty, these aerial photos taken by a photographer flying from Beijing to Guangzhou are still kind of breathtaking nonetheless.
The images were taken this week, following air pollution readings that hit an eight-month high in Beijing. Forecasters have said that the smog will only worsen, Reuters reports.
The polluted air has proven especially frustrating to city leaders preparing for the arrival of important politicians ahead of the APEC meeting in Beijing next next month. The government has launched (yet another) war on smog by shutting down steel mills, ordering vehicles off the road, and essentially kicking out residents by giving them a five-day November holiday to enjoy elsewhere.
At least we’ve gotten some cool images and high fashion moments out of the situation. Obama and Abe will probably be really impressed by the pictures of smoggy Beijing towers that like look like UFOs.
