“It was like going over a step or a bump and then the bus went out of control,” said the driver of the tour bus that overturned near Shanghai on Monday morning. The accident left six people dead and 40 people injured, local authorities said.
Of the passengers injured, 27 were taken to the Shanghai No. 6 People’s Hospital in Lingang, Shanghai Daily reports. Five had to undergo surgery and one is said to have been paralyzed in the accident.
The bus, carrying 46 people, overturned near Xiaoyangshan wharf on the island of Yangshan, which connects Shanghai’s business and financial center with the 32-kilometer-long Donghai Bridge.
The driver, surnamed Zhao, was flown by helicopter to Huashan Hospital. Doctors said he’d broken his back but didn’t suffer spinal damage.
The hospitalized passengers are all in stable condition. Many of them said they didn’t realize that the vehicle had hit anything at all.
“The bus just overturned slowly,” one person said to Shanghai Television.
Very few passengers were wearing seat belts because “no one asked them to,” according to the report.
