In what must have been a dark day for fish, locals in Hangzhou celebrated their traditional pond-clearing festival yesterday by storming an unfortunate pond in mass, wielding nets, buckets, and other implements of destruction.
NetEase reports that this assault is a yearly tradition for locals around the Xixi Wetland, located outside of Hangzhou. The higher purpose of the massacre is to clear and drain ponds for winter in order to remove silt and keep the water clean. The lower purpose is that it seems like great fun unless you happen to have gills.
The pond didn’t go out without a fight though, and soon the hunters became the hunted.
Of course, we’ve seen people brave worse dangers to catch a few fish before.
