A man in Ningbo has been arrested for drug abuse and giving the police false information after he disguised his identity and lived out the next 20 years of his life as a woman, reports South China Morning Post.
The man, aged 39, was originally from nearby city Zhoushan and had reportedly been fooling his boss and co-workers about his gender for over two decades after his arrival in Ningbo.
His secret, however, was revealed last Thursday, when local policemen raided his apartment and saw from his ID card that he had been lying about his sex.
Working at a local factory, the man had gone to great lengths to keep his real identity a secret—he changed his name to Lina, wore makeup, rarely socialized and even refused to use the toilet at work.
The boss at the factory was reportedly suspicious that his employee had been hiding his true identity, but didn’t want to investigate any further into this private matter. “But she’s hard-working, gentle and quiet. So I never ask for her [identification card],” he told reporters.
The Zhoushan native apparently wanted to be a woman from an early age following his obsession with the female characters in yueju, the local opera style. This prompted him to run away to Ningbo at the age of 18 in order to live out his dream of being a woman.
Apparently all things come to an end though, and he has told police that he intends on returning to his hometown to continue life as a man.
