An eight-year-old girl who was rescued from a pigsty where her mentally-ill mother had kept her is now recovering from malnutrition and lung infections at a hospital in Sichuan province.
The girl was rescued after Peng Liying, the deputy director of Sichuan’s Daocheng county, visited the family’s home last month. It’s unclear how long she’d been living in such conditions, but Peng told the People’s Daily that the girl was found wearing only a hat with a blanket covering her body.
“She seemed unable to move, as if she was stuck in crevices in a rock,” Peng said.
The child, nicknamed Xiaozhong, was only 78 centimeters tall and weighed a mere seven kilograms, far below the average growth level for a healthy girl her age.
She was severely malnourished and suffering from lung infections and congenital heart disease, Shanghai Daily reports, citing the China News Service.
Xiaozhong was taken to a hospital in Chengdu. Peng raised 27,000 yuan from a local women’s federation, the Red Cross and the civil affairs authority to fund her treatment.
After nearly three weeks in the hospital, the girl has gained 500 grams and doctors say her lung infections are under control. Unfortunately, she can’t speak and must be fed with syringes, as she can’t swallow on her own.
Right now, she’s too weak to undergo heart surgery.
