Police are looking into reports about a law student who allegedly threw boiling water on a professor who’d reprimanded her for coming into class late.
Yes, a law student. A grown, adult, law student filled up a bottle with steaming hot water and splashed it on her professor’s face and neck because she was jokingly criticized for being late.
The alleged attacked on Professor Jiang Jiyue occurred around 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the Songjiang campus of East China University of Political Science and Law.
The student, a senior surnamed Wang, has not yet been detained, Sina reports.
A student witness said that when Wang walked in late, she told Jiang that she’d been preparing her graduate entrance exams and lost track of time.
Jiang had remarked that if she continued showing up late, she wouldn’t get through her exams.
“The professor meant it as a joke,” the witness said.
But later, during a class break, Wang grabbed Jiang’s water bottle, filled it with boiling water, then returned and threw it across his face as the class of around 60 students looked up in shock.
Jiang, who’s in his 50s, suffered second-degree burns on his face and neck. The university said he won’t be able to teach classes for at least a year.
“I did not criticize her in a serious way. I said how will you pass the graduate examination when you can’t even figure out the time for your class?”
“Then during the break, she took my bottle and I thought she was being nice and regretted my action. I was touched for a moment and said thank you,” Jiang said.
Wang’s parents have been informed but a public affairs official for the university said that as an adult, she’ll have to bear the legal consequences.
