It’s been a few days after Singles’ Day but skyrocketing online sales have not only sent Taobao villages celebrating like it was the Chinese New Year, but also set off ripple effects on a university campus in Xi’An as students help stem the labour shortage by offering parcel collection services. Will the madness ever end?
China News reporters spotted parcels strewn all over the ground outside the Xi’An University of Technology campus. They were under the charge of two university students, who had been roped in to help issue and deliver the parcels to other students at the campus. All university students had to do to retrieve their parcels from the two workers was to hand over their order number to them.
The students told press that there were over 500 orders on Thursday, and 700 orders to be distributed on Friday. “We just wanted to earn a bit of extra pocket money, and we also happened to not be very busy with classes right now.” The Singles’ Day sales frenzy is likely to continue for a week, till 18 November.
