At least 8,000 teachers working at elementary schools and middle schools in Zhaodong city of Heilongjiang province went on strike on Monday to demand for higher pay, resulting in a majority of the city’s schools being temporarily closed and a number of Strike Preparedness Kits being pulled out of the closets.
The teachers say that their monthly salary is about 1,000 yuan less than the national average level. While they’ve tried to bring this up to the local government, they claim their appeal has been repeatedly ignored.
One teacher told reporters that government authorities threatened to fire them if they didn’t cease the picket lines.
Some schools resumed as several teachers returned to their classes yesterday, according to NetEase. Teachers on strike are still waiting on talks with relevant authorities.
