A cooking competition called on 133 chefs from over 30 Shanghai universities to produce a new cafeteria dish that could potentially be served to students across the city. The results aren’t exactly traditional, and from the looks of it, probably aren’t very tasty either. Considering the abysmal state of cafeteria food in general, however, the creators deserve a round of applause for their colorful attempts.
Here’re a peek at what some of the cooks put together.
Fudan University: Rice cake with minced beef and cantaloupe
East China University of Science and Technology: Rice wine-dipped ribs
Shanghai University of Finance and Economics: crispy dumplings seasoned with salt and pepper
Shanghai Jianqiao University: Lemon Chicken
Not the lemon chicken you have in mind. This one is just slices of lemon mixed with pieces of chicken and some peppers thrown in the mix.
Shanghai Institute of Health Sciences: Ribs with honey peaches
ECNU: “The Lotus Pool by Moonlight”
Named after a piece of Chinese classic prose, although there appears to be no lotus. Or moonlight.
Shanghai Jianqiao University: “Mother & Son Reunion”
Second entry from Jianqiao Univerity. Forget about what it tastes like, those ‘shroom turtles deserve first prize.
