Seven people were killed and one person injured when a man armed with a knife entered a female dormitory and began attacking employees at the No. 281 Hospital in Qinhuangdo, Hebei province in the early hours of Thursday.
The attack happened at 3:26 a.m., according to Sina News. Six nurses and the dorm supervisor were found dead, and another nurse injured.
The suspected assailant, 27-year-old Li Xiaolong, is from Tangshan, another city in Hebei. He’s currently in detainment as further investigation is underway.
The tragic case follows a string of violent attacks in hospitals across mainland China, many of which have been triggered by conflicts between medical staff and families of patients.
In March, three doctors were injured after being attacked by a knife-wielding patient at the People’s Hospital in Shanghai. Weeks before that, a 20-year-old nurse was beaten up by a middle-aged woman over the “inadequate” treatment of her hospitalized daughter.
The clashes have prompted some hospitals to begin training their employees in self-defense.
The motive behind this most recent case is not yet clear.
