Shanghai Metro is currently offering free public Wifi to passengers traveling on Line 13! Enjoy it while you can, commuters, because it’s only a trial run and it probably won’t last long, according to the Metro operator. The lord giveth and the lord taketh away.
Shanghai Daily explains more about the Wifi and gives details about how one might get access to said Wifi:
Passengers can connect to the Wifi simply by typing in their cellphone number and a verification code on the login page, which has a Shanghai Metro icon.
According to the login page, the Wifi connection speed was 100 megabits per second. It also said the free Wifi only covers Line 13.
Shanghai Daily found the Internet connection was stable and fast in Line 13 stations, but the signal was sometimes lost on moving trains.
The operator would not elaborate on whether the service would be available on all lines in the future (or even any at all).
