If you are a person who has used the internet in the past few months, you’ve probably heard the viral song “Xiao Pingguo” (“Little Apple”) by the Chopstick Brothers. If not the original, at least one of the many, many parody videos that it has spawned (we acknowledge that we have willingly fed into the madness).
The Chopstick Brothers, a Chinese duo consisting of director Xiao Yang and musician Wang Taili, just performed the song at 42nd American Music Awards in LA, California and won the International Song Award category for the hit, which appeared in the Chinese-language film Old Boys: The Way of the Dragon.
The tune, a favorite among square-dancing grandmothers and shopping mall lobbies, was awarded based on viewers’ votes. This is the same category that South Korean singer Psy previously was awarded in for his equally irritating 2012 hit “Gangnam Style,” if that says anything.
They’re having fun, even if it’s lip-synched fun. Watch the performance below.
Still doesn’t beat this version (which we feel went greatly under-appreciated by this viewership).
