A three-year-old wild giant panda has died several days after being found with severe injuries from an apparent marten attack. This is a dark day in the panda community.
On November 17, the panda was discovered curled up on the ground in a cave near a conservation station at the Tangjiahe Nature Reserve in Sichuan province, with its stomach badly wounded and its intestines exposed. Officials at the nature reserve believe the injuries were caused by several yellow-throated martens.
The panda was sent to the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding for treatment on November 20, but workers there decided to opt for extensive conservative treatment rather than surgery due to the panda’s state of weakness and shock, according to Xinhua.
The panda fell into a coma on several occasions and died on Tuesday afternoon. Autopsy reports showed that the panda died from a culmination of problems including intestinal necrosis, septicemia, liver damage and severe malnutrition.
We’re generally a lover of all animals, but seriously, fuck those martens.
