Parents in Shaanxi province are seeking euthanasia for their four-year-old daughter who they say is suffering unbearably from eye cancer.
The girl was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rapidly developing cancer that forms in the retina, around two years ago, according to QQ News. The family took their daughter to several hospitals, including Beijing’s Tongren Hospital, which specializes in Ophthalmology, but doctors agreed that her disease was incurable.
Last year, she had her left eyeball removed in an operation, but the cancer cells continued to spread and a large, malignant tumor began growing on her cheek.
The girl’s father said that the family can’t bear to see her suffer anymore. “We hope to find a hospital that will admit our child and help lessen her pain so that she can leave this world peacefully,” he said.
Euthanasia is banned under current Chinese law, although recent surveys have shown that more than two-thirds of people in the country have a tolerant attitude towards the practice.
