China’s capital may not be the go-to destination for majestic ice castles, polar bears and dreamy snow-carved maidens, but damn it, it’s got the next best thing: a small plot of frozen-over water from a broken pipe. Romantic.
Some crowds of people posed for pictures and brought their little young things to play in an area of the the Xicheng district where nearly 300 square meters of ice glazed over the ground, trees and bushes.
A water pipe burst in a roadside greenbelt in the early hours of Monday, resulting in a temporary wonderland of icicles, snow mountains, frost nipping at noses, etc. The temperature reached -5.5 degrees on Monday, a mere breeze of unpleasantness compared to the current -15 degrees recorded in the Ice City that is Harbin.
