A dedicated father who turned himself into a “human punching bag” on a Beijing street to raise money for his son with leukemia has already managed to raise around 800,000 RMB in donations from the public.
Thirty-year-old Xia Jun said he greatly appreciates the donations and plans on finding a job when his son’s condition gets better so that he can pay the remaining fees himself, according to ifeng News.
“The most urgent problem has already been solved. I would feel bad if I kept receiving money from others,” said Xia.
Xia said the media exposure drew massive attention to his family’s plights. “There are many warm-hearted people coming to the hospital to see my son every day. Sometimes more than 20 people would come in a single day. My phone always runs out of battery because nice people keep calling me. I probably missed a lot of peoples’ calls,” Xia told media.
Among the donators are students, teachers, government employees and corporation owners. Some of them reached out to Xia and said they are willing to help him out in the future as well.
The main doctor for Xia’s son said that his condition is currently under control. An infection was recently found in his lung, but this is normal for patients with leukemia and can be cured with treatment, he said.
