People have already begun purchasing train tickets by the handful for chunyun, the 40-day travel period surrounding China’s most important holiday, the Spring Festival, also known as the the world’s largest human migration. It has begun.
The China Railway Corporation this past Sunday started selling trains tickets for the holiday, which falls on February 19 next year. Passengers can book their tickets for chunyun (February 4 to March 16) online or by phone. Various ticket offices (including Shanghai Railway Station) are selling tickets as well.
The Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, is by far the most important holiday for family in China, and as billions of trips are made during the chunyun travel period, some people go through hell (endless swarming crowds) to get that ticket home. Others who can’t will go to extreme measures to make the trip.
A record 3.6 billion trips were made during the Spring Festival holiday last year in total, according to the Ministry of Transport, while Shanghai alone played host to 3.62 million holiday travelers.
For now, we’ll forget about the heinous traffic jams and instead look forward to the many magical stories that surface during the holiday.
