Shanghai’s beloved Glamour Bar, a glitzy riverfront venue renowned for its parties, cultural and literary events as well as spectacular Bund views, sadly closed down this past Saturday.
Australian owner Michelle Garnaut cited rising rental costs as the reason for the bar’s untimely ending. Since its opening eight years ago, the Art Deco-inspired Glamour Bar has been praised for producing some of Shanghai’s most exquisitely crafted cocktails, glittery New Year’s parties and must-see events ranging from burlesque shows to the hugely popular Shanghai International Literary Festival, the brainchild of Garnaut. Shanghai Lit Fest, the largest English-language literary event in China, has featured prominent names including Amy Tan, Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Gore Vidal and Ma Jian, among many more.
On the upside, Garnaut last week renewed the lease for Glamour’s upstairs neighbor, M on the Bund, and plans on adding a bar for the restaurant’s Crystal Room.
