The case of a 22-year-old woman who’s cries for help were ignored as she was harassed on a bus before being dragged off and beaten is currently one of the top-trending stories on Weibo.
Last Friday, the Liu Le was taking a bus in Nanyang, Henan province when she was harassed by a male passenger sitting beside her. “I stood up immediately and asked the driver to call the police,” Liu told reporters.
Her calls for help were ignored by the driver, who refused to stop, as well as the other passengers onboard the bus. She took out her cell phone and called her father, but the man pulled her down and grabbed her phone.
Another male passenger in the back of the bus then stood up and walked towards the driver, asking him to stop. Instead of helping the girl, however, he joined the man beside Liu and and the two dragged the woman out of the bus. Together, they beat her until she was unconscious.
Liu’s father found her at the scene and with the help of police, they caught the first suspect. The second suspect escaped.
“How can the bus driver be indifferent to a passenger’s cry for help?” her father asked reporters furiously.
The detained suspect will serve 15 days in detention while further investigation is underway, and the bus driver has been suspended from his job, according to the most recent reports.
