An unlicensed kindergarten building standing by itself amid a field of debris from a demolition project in Xi’an, Shaanxi province has recently gotten attention online.
The school, located in Tumen, has taken in over 100 students since September without a proper license, according to CCTV News, although the principal claims that they are in the process of acquiring one.
The area around the kindergarten has been undergoing demolition and construction since 2013, and the school is surrounded by debris on all sides. The Tumen Community Office reportedly issued a notice trying to close it down, but not much has come of that.
Most villagers affected by the construction have been relocated. Parents of children who are still attending the kindergarten are now planning to pull them out of school due to hazards posed by the surrounding environment.
Kindergarten Principal Jiang Genghua said that the school, formally an office building, signed a 20-year lease in April. “The construction work usually goes on at night and we will do all we can to protect the children,” he was quoted as saying in the report.
